Lake Superior often gets wild and sprays the shoreline. When conditions are just so, icicles can form along the shore flora and conglomerate.

A snowshoe out to Hunter's Point always proves to be worth every step. Ever changing in the winter months due to Lake Superior waves crashing onto shore and the snow piling up all around.

The Snowshoe and X-C Ski Trails have been groomed and tracked and in excellent condition. These are beautiful trails and there is a fresh layer of snow almost every day.

The work of a Pileated Woodpecker

The Pileated woodpecker is a local, year round resident here in Copper Harbor. It is the largest North American woodpecker (besides the Ivory Billed, thought to be extinct) about the size of a crow. Their holes are unique in that they have squared off edges and rectangular holes rather than round, and of course, they are also very large.
This is some current work from a local woodpecker - The photo of the bird is not current, but is posted to show what the culprit looks like. It was taken here in Copper Harbor.

If you enjoy mushroom hunting, fall offers up some amazing fungi! Take a hike one of the many beautiful trails ~ Estivant Pines is a great place ~ and find numerous interesting mushrooms.

The clouds were fluffy and lit up by the setting sun - very cool. Horseshoe Harbor is a beautiful spot near Copper Harbor, owned by the Nature Conservancy.

Well the fireworks were set off despite the rain. The thunder/lightning was putting on a show of it's own.

One of the fundraisers for the fireworks this year were laser glasses to watch the show through. I took the following shots through a pair. They made for some interesting displays!

Fanny Hooe Creek has been running pretty good lately. The creek empties out into Lake Superior near the Lighthouse Lookout.

It was 46 degrees at 7 am - spring is coming....really!

Warm and sunny and 66 degrees already at 7:30 am. Maybe the warmer weather produced this band of fog that was crossing the harbor.

What a gorgeous day! After a few inches of snow the other day, it's acting like spring again.
Hunter's Point has some amazing ice and snow sculptures along the shore.

Lake Fanny Hooe

You can still walk on the lake, the ice is thick. It is breaking up along the shore however.

It has been sunny and progressively warmer all week. Keep thinking Spring!

Manganese Falls

The falls are hardly recognizable this time of year. All you can see now is alot of ice and the water running through here and there. In spite of the fact we got about 100 inches less snow this year, the water seems to be running pretty good. I'll post another pic at the same place in a couple weeks.

This was the 2nd Annual Copper Dog 150 Sled Dog challenge! This year's race took mushers on an exciting backwoods tour of the Keweenaw racing from Calumet to Eagle Harbor to Copper Harbor and finally back home to Calumet.
